I was infected.
pif looks like gif.
I got a link ending with handcuffs.pif|
It's a virus... cuz .pif files are shortcut files to executables.
This virus basically uses MSN as a transmission tool.
It prevents the user from signing on.
It will message everyone in your contact list in order to spread itself.

Fortunately, I took the appropriate steps and I think I stopped the spreading phase. However my MSN appears to be corrupted, it logs me in and out every 2 mins.

run the removal tool from symantec,
AND
run your anti-virus at the same time.

I use Opera and Mozilla.
mostly Opera.

and I use msn cuz... oh... i dunno... 100 people i know use it.
And I tried using Trillian, but I much prefer the interface of MSN Messenger.

Aha, that's funny. Both of you took me seriously. Here's a tip for you guys: Text lies. Try focusing on what I'm saying instead of how I'm saying it. When I made that post, I was smiling the whole time. Now, if it had been someone outside of the clan, the poor sucker would have been taken out and shot. And that would have been me in generous mode. No worries here, guys.

Back to the issue at hand. Try Firefox anyway. Just take a look at it. You might like it better than the browser in the Mozilla suite and Opera. As for not liking Trillian...fine. That's why I said, "Trillian or something." I can't emphasize this enough. Find another messenger. It's amazing how many shitty things people get stuck with because everyone else they know uses it. Seriously man, boycott msn. Bitch smack your friends around until they start using something else. Since you seem extraverted, try Odigo. If not, try Yahoo. Any other concerns? I'll try to address those, too.

i meant that i use Mozilla FireFox and Opera. Both of which I like far more than IE.
I will NOT boycott Microsoft simply because I am dependent on Microsoft for games. Face it, we're all Microsoft whores whether we like it or not.
Now, I like both Windows and Linux equally when it comes to simple workstation usage, but however, gaming is practically windows only.
As for boycotting MSN... I prefer avoiding them and sticking to more efficient alternatives. but the fact of the matter is that most viruses, whether i use trillian or not, would still infect me , cuz they are transmitted via file transfer.

I was going to remove IE altogether upon next format, but i think i'll just install service pack 2 instead.. mostly since some sites like www.ifilm.com require IE to function.

IE is a part of the operating system, which is the main reason why it's so insecure.
